Powder coated steel is fine until it chips, and on a patio it always chips. Water gets under the coat, and by the second or third season there are rust marks on the legs and on the deck under them.

This set is built on an aluminum frame with a black powder coat. Aluminum does not rust the way steel does, so a chipped leg stays a cosmetic mark. The maker calls it weather proof and sunlight resistant.

The frame

Aluminum tube with a black powder coat. The maker calls it rust resistant and scratch resistant, and X braces under the armrests add stability. No grade or wall thickness is published, so we quote neither, but the material itself is what matters for a set left outside through Canadian spring rain and fall frost.

Sizes and ratings

Loveseat 47 in wide, chairs 25 in, both 28 in deep and 30.5 in tall. Seats sit at 18 in and the arms at 24.5 in. The table is 40 in by 21 in and 16.5 in tall. Ratings: 600 lb, 300 lb and 250 lb. With the table 16.5 in tall against 18 in seats, the top sits just below seat level, which is where outdoor furniture guides place a coffee table.

By the pool

Aluminum and pool decks suit each other: nothing to rust from splashes and wet towels. Seats sit 18 in up, a comfortable height for getting in and out. Grouped around the table, the four seats stay within the 6 to 8 ft seat to seat distance layout guides give for conversation.

Cushions

Eight seat and back cushions, thick and resilient per the maker, each with a zipped cover. The frame can stay outside; the cushions last longer brought in dry when rain is due and stored indoors over winter. Let washed covers dry completely before they go back on.
